Centre for Research and Documentation conducted
a study among the Sunday School Students from 18
parishes in the Cochin city. The purpose of the
study was to understand where the Catholic
students in the city do their studies, the
percentage of students in the schools run by
different managements, number of schools run by
different managements in relation to the
Catholic students, whether the students are
getting religious or moral education etc.
Students from 1st Std to 12th Std were chosen
for the study and the data was collected from
4743 students from 18 parishes of the
Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly in the city.
2931 out of the 4743 students are studying in
the Christian management schools and that
constitute 61.8% of the total students taken for
the study. Only the Christian management schools
have included moral classes in their curriculum.
1496 out of the 4743 students study in other
management schools including the Muslim
management, Hindu management and other private
management schools. The total number of the
students in government schools is 118 and that
constitute only 2.49% of the total students
under study. The Kendriya Vidyalayas or the
Central government schools accommodate 4.17% of
the total students with a figure of 198.

The
4743 students covered for the study do their
studies in 123 schools in the various parts of
the city including its outskirts. The Christian
management runs 51 schools out of the 123 and
students in those schools are given moral
classes. The Ernakulam-Angamaly Arch-diocese
runs 23 schools out of the 51 Christian
management schools where the city students
study. Students also study in six central
government schools, 12 government schools, six
Muslim management schools and 48 other private
and Hindu management schools.
Moral values have significant role in the
personality development of every individual. The
moral education in the school days will
definitely influence the children in their
personality development. Even though the moral
classes are crucial in the formation and
development of the personality of children, the
govt. and the managements except the Christian
managements are still hesitating or not giving
enough importance to offer it to the students in
the schools managed by them. It’s a fine
instance of how the authorities forget minor but
important issues while they try to go after the
big. It is important to develop values and good
habits among the children in the school days.
Formation of such good habits has great
significance in the growth and development of
every individual. Moreover, no one can deny the
effect of moral values in the behaviour of
individuals. In such a condition it’s pity to
know that both the government and other
management schools are not giving enough
importance to moral education. It’s quite ironic
to show the hesitation towards the moral
education while we are about to introduce sex
education in the schools, as even with the moral
education we can attain a few desired results
expect from the sex education.
