1. Perceived image of the educational and health care institutions in Kerala Church and their Christian objectives

The educational institutions in Kerala are profit-making institutions compromising the value education expected from them. The teachers become professionals without real commitment to the responsibility entrusted to them. As a result, the students are not formed to face the challenges of life. Catholic institutions often tend to follow the same model forgetting their witnessing value. We would like to study:

  • Number of institutions and their management

  • Purpose of existence and present functioning

  • Impacts on the society

  • Their commitment to the mission of the Church

  • Relevance of existence

  • Relationship with other parallel systems (government institutions etc.)

  • Changing interests

  • Commitment to the socially and economically backward

2. Influence of the consumer culture on moral and spiritual life of the people

Rapid growth of the city and influence of globalization destroy the family values that have been integral part of the culture of people. People become more individualistic and personal freedom takes the place of commitment to family ties. We would like to study:

  • Traditional value systems of Christian families

  • Factors that influence today’s Christian

  • Concerns and challenges of modern Christian

  • Principles that guide people today

  • Observance of spiritual activities

  • Relationship between God and man

  • Influence of the Church teachings on Christians

  • What do the people expect from the Church

  • Where does the Church fail to address the needs of man today

3. Changes taking place in the religious practices

Due to the influence of politics and vested interests, religions become agents of communal violence and fundamentalism. Religious harmony that had been the mark of Indian culture gives way to intolerance and disharmony. We would like to study:

  • Attitude of people of other religions to Christianity

  • What do they expect from Christians

  • What they don’t like in the Christian living

  • Attitude of Christians towards other religious people

  • Contributions of Christianity towards religious harmony

  • Advantages and disadvantages of a pluralistic society

  • Christian witnessing among the non-Christians

These are some of the major issues confronting the Kerala Church and needed to be addressed. Besides these specific works, a number of minor researches on different issues will be taken up through the Centre that would require immediate attention such as emigration of Catholics to other Indian cities and abroad, social changes affecting religious practices, changing trends in religious vocations etc.
