1,17,699 are the total number of students
studied this academic year in 208
educational institutions in the Archdiocese
of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The Archdiocese is
blessed with 17 colleges (both regular and
parallel together), 27 higher secondary
schools, 41 high schools, 37 upper primary
schools and 86 lower primary schools. In
addition to this there are 146 nursery
schools where thousands of little children
undergo pre-schooling.
Centre for Research & Documentation
conducted a general study of the students
and staff in our educational institutions.
The aim of the study was, to asses the
number students and staff belonging to
different categories sex-wise,
religion-wise, age-wise and
qualification-wise. Data was collected from
all the aided and unaided educational
institutions such as colleges, higher
secondary schools (HSS), high schools (HS),
upper primary schools (UP) and lower primary
schools (LP).
Out of the total 1,17,699 students, the
number of the male students is 57,852 and
that of female students is 59,847 that
represent 49.15% and 50.85% respectively.
The total number of Christian students is
55,177, and of Hindu students is 51,735 and
the strength of Muslim students is 10,787.
Percentage distribution of the Christian
students is 46.88, Hindu students 43.96 and
that of Muslim students is 9.16% of the
total student strength.
The total number of teaching staff in these
institutions is 4,570, out of which 17.26%
i.e. 789 are male, and 82.74% i.e. 3781 are
females. Among the teaching staff in these
educational institutions, 3,791 are
Christians, 726 are Hindus, 53 are Muslim
staff, and that represents 82.95%, 15.87%
and 1.16% respectively. Among the teaching
staff, 88 (1.92%) are PhD qualified, 1,362
(29.80%) are postgraduates, 2,072 (45.34%)
are graduates and 1,048 (22.93%) are under
graduates. Among the teaching staff 850 i.e,
18.60% belong to the age group of 18-30,
3,126 i.e, 68.40% belong to the age group of
30-50 and the rest 594 i.e, 13% belong to
the age group of above 50.
Out of total 949 non-teaching staff in our
208 educational institutions 490 are male
and 459 are females that represent 51.63%
and 48.37% respectively. When we classify
the non-teaching staff according to
religion, 835 i.e, 87.99% are Christians,
100 i.e, 10.53% are Hindus and the rest 14
i.e, 1.48% belong to the Muslim community.
The analysis of the educational
qualification of the non-teaching staff
reveals that 2.53% (24) are postgraduates,
20.23% (192) are graduates and the rest
77.24% (733) are under graduates. The data
also indicate that 193 non-teaching staff,
which represents 20.34% are from the age
group of 18-30, 614 of them representing
64.70% are from the age group of 30-50 and
142 which represents 14.96% are from the age
category of above 50.
The student male-female ratio in those
educational institutions is1:1.03, the
male-female ratio among the teaching staff
in the educational institutions is 1:4.79
and the male-female ratio among the
non-teaching staff in those educational
institutions is 1.07:1.
The over all teacher-student ratio in the
colleges under the Ernakulam-Angamaly
archdiocese is 1:18.34. The overall
teacher-student ratio in the Higher
Secondary Schools is 1:24.32. The ratio in
the Aided Higher Secondary Schools is
1:26.48 and the same ratio is 1:24.52 in the
Unaided schools. The overall teacher-student
ratio in the High schools is 1:27.18 while
it is 1:28.45 and 1:23.05 respectively in
the Aided and Unaided schools. The overall
Upper Primary school teacher-student ratio
is 1:30.09 and the same ratio is 1:32.56 in
the Aided schools and 1:24.96 in the Unaided
schools. The overall teacher-student ratio
in the Lower Primary schools is 1:27.53. The
same ratio is 1:30.46 in the Aided Schools
and 1:21.76 in the Unaided Schools. |
