Summary of Research Design

Research Problem: The transient phase starting from notification over the land acquisition until their proper resettlement is crucial. The question posed for the research is regarding the enormity of psychological struggles the families undergo in different realms till the proper resettlement and rehabilitation package materialized.

General Objective: To bring out to the lime light the unnoticed psychological struggles of families facing displacement

Specific Objectives

  • To identify the trauma people undergo since the issue of notice of land acquisition.

  • To learn those uncertainties regarding planning for the future with compensation money

  • To discover the hurdles people face from the authorities appointed for the land acquisition process and its impact on the sufferer.

  • To comprehend the intensity of fears regarding the security in the new settlement area

  • To gain insight into the worries concerning the many losses especially the amenities such as infrastructure facilities, academic, medical and religious facilities they enjoy in their present area and those people fear missing in the future settlement.

  • To find various concerns and preoccupations the family is having about their school going children

  • To study the fear of losing employment and means of livelihood

Universe of the Study: The universe of the study comprises all the households, who are facing eviction after notification of the acquisition of their land and house and are waiting for resettlement.

Population: The population for the research includes those families irrespective of gender, religion, occupation and class expecting acquisition of their land in Kakkanad for the project of Smart City and those families expecting acquisition of their land in Vaduthala for the project of Rail Link to Vallarpadam

Unit of Study: Each household who have received notice of acquisition of their land in Kakkanad for the project of Smart City as well as every household who have received notice of acquisition of their land in Vaduthala for the project of Rail Link to Vallarpadam. The head of the family will be the direct focus of the interview.

Tools of Data Collection: The data will be collected through Questionnaire, observation, and focus group discussion. A structured interview schedule designed to serve the purpose with questions aiming towards problem area.

Type of Sampling: The census sampling is found feasible in this study. The accurate number of families facing displacement in the study area is available and the covering of every family is viable in the process of data collection.

Techniques of Analysis: The data will be analyzed and interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively. The questions are formulated so as to gain the clear picture of the problem both by objectively measuring through quantitative questions as well as descriptively analyzing the qualitative questions.

Research Design: The research will have a descriptive strategy to be applied. Descriptive nature of the study is suitable and the problems can be better understood in narrative nature. Hence, the study is mainly qualitative and can bring better result through descriptive approach. The respondent will be the male or female head of the family. It is designed that in 50% of the families the female head will be the respondent and in the rest of the 50% of the families male head will be the respondent.
