Situational Analysis

A situational analysis was conducted in order to gain insight into the magnitude of the problem. It brought forth the real problems communities face due to evacuation. Followed by the situational analysis steps were taken to conduct an in-depth research into the problem.

The following issues are identified by means of field visit and interaction with those affected by displacement notice and the action council members organizing agitation against forced displacement. The following are some of the issues to be highlighted.

  • Traumatic experience hearing the news of displacement

  • Feel their voice is unheard as they are under privileged

  • Exploitation of the unvoiced section

  • Anxiety on loss of property and means of livelihood

  • Denied or deprived of enjoying the fruits of development as they are rehabilitated to remote places

  • Loss of access to schooling for school-age children

  • The land price fixed is meager to buy a better land in an already developed area.

  • Cultural disintegration and disempowerment

  • Uncertainties of resettling in unfamiliar and often inhospitable locations

  • Fear of facing impoverishment situation

  • Anxiety over low and delayed compensation payments.

  • Harassment from local revenue officials

  • Disputes over compensation money emerge among family members.

  • Conflict of interest erupts within the family or the community, as some are ready to abide by the terms and do not want to face a force situation.
